BUSINESS OWNERS AND DIRECTORS ARE
IN DANGER OF FINES AND PROSECUTION
FOR PUTTING FLUORESCENT LAMPS AND TUBES IN THE RUBBISH
We2 - the first free collection and lighting recycling advice service is launched to help organisations avoid fines for not recycling
“Business owners across the UK could now find themselves fined or prosecuted if they continue to put old fluorescent lamps and tubes out for rubbish collection because many do not seem to know how the new WEEE directive introduced in 1 July affects them. I often find companies in danger of falling foul of this regulation,” says Costas Michael, founder and managing director of City & West which supplies a million light bulbs and tubes a year to UK businesses.
“Many owners and directors seem to be either unaware or not to understand that the WEEE compliance scheme expects business users to arrange (and pay) for the transportation of the waste to specialised recycle drop points around the country. Within these regulations the Environment Agency can impose fines and ultimately prosecute those who ignore or abuse the regulations.”
“It is to help organisations by making it easy for them to comply with regulations, that we have introduced We2, the first free lamp collection service in the UK, for our customers, starting in the London area at present but gradually rolling out the scheme nationwide.”
“We provide corrugated plastic recycle ‘coffins’ for customers and will collect these when they are full,” adds Costas.
“We will also help any business with free advice on any lighting recycling issue. Please call us on 020 8885 6655, e-mail cm@cityandwest.com or visit
